Data Community Tech Docs GA4
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is used to collect data on the usage of the data community’s technical documentation
This data can be accessed via the Google Analytics 4 user interface, the GA4 Looker Studio connection, and the Google Analytics Data API.
Content
Data was first collected into this property on 02/03/2026. Data was exported to a table in BigQuery from 05/03/2026.
Access
The GA4 property sits within the account GDS - Apps.
At the moment anyone with the ‘Org Admin’ role in the GDS GA4 account can access the GA4 property. This is mainly Senior PAs and a few other people that have been given access for a specific reason.
If anyone else requires access to this account, please contact the GOV.UK GA4 support inbox.
Location
There is one GA4 property for all the data called GA4 Data Documentation.
Daily tables can also be found in BigQuery in the following dataset gds-bq-data.analytics_522950481.
GA4 settings
Production property set-up
At set-up, we chose the following reporting options:
- Reporting timezone of United Kingdom - (GMT+00:00) United Kingdom Time
- Currency is British Pound (£)
- Industry category of Law and Government
- Business size of Very Large - 501+ employees
- The business objective (which determines which standard reports GA4 will provide in the property), was set to ‘Understand web and/or app traffic’.
Test property set-up
Before collecting data in the Production property, the data was sent by GTM to a test property in the GA4 account GDS - Non-Prod.
The test property was set-up in the same way, except for the business objective which was set as ‘Other business objectives’.
Data collection
Google Signals data collection and Ads personalisation has not been enabled.
Granular location and device data collection is enabled to allow reporting on the city-level location and devices used by our users.
Data processing and modification
At present, we have not created any custom events or designated any events as conversions within GA4.
We are not using GA4’s inbuilt data redaction feature on GOV.UK.
If you spot any PII or other data that should not be present in any GDS GA4 datasets, please raise a Zendesk ticket or contact the Insights & Analytics team.
Retention
A data retention period for this data is set in the GA4 user interface. This is set to 14 months.
