Google Cloud Platform

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is a suite of cloud computing services.

GDS maintains a central account for use across GDS.

GOV.UK’s BigQuery data warehouse lives within GCP. There is separate guidance on how to use BigQuery.

Governance

GCP is certified as ISO/IEC 27001:2022 compliant.

In many cases (such as with the collection and use of Google Analytics data), the storage and usage of data within GCP is governed by Data Protection Impact Assessments.

Projects

We use projects in GCP to separate different data sources, such as our GA4 and Knowledge Graph data.

Projects should have key roles (owner and editor) assigned to Google groups rather than individuals, and should ideally be managed by Terraform. These groups can be found by anyone in GDS by searching Google groups for ‘GCP’ (the prefix at the start of all Google groups used for this purpose) or the project name.
